Humphrey V de Bohun, Earl of Essex & 3rd Earl of Hereford, Lord High Constable of England
3rd earl of Hereford, England, created earl of Essex, England, in 1258. Also in 1258, Bohun became a member of a council of barons appointed to share ruling power with the king of England. In 1263 King Henry III decided he would no longer share his rule with the barons. Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, led the barons to war against the king (see Barons' War). Bohun remained in support of the king, who was defeated and captured by the barons in 1264.
