Roger de Mortimer, Lord of Wigmore
Was in constant battle with the Welsh.
Opposed the accession of Henry II, and induced Roger, Earl of Hereford, to fortify his castles against Henry, and did the same, himself. Gilbert Foiliot, Bishop of Hereford, however, persuaded the Earl of Hereford not to do so. Hugh refused to back down, though, which forced Henry II to raise an army to quell de Mortimer's insurrection. Hugh later finished the foundation of the abbey his father had started at Wigmore, and in his old age, became a canon of that abbey.
