William Sprague, General, Governor of Rhode Island
General during the Civil War, as well as Governor of Rhode Island. He was from an extremely wealthy and politically influential family. Served as Governor of Rhode Island from 1859-1863. He commanded a regiment and a battery of light horse artillery at 1st Bull Run where he had his horse shot out from under him. He later served at Williamsburg and Yorktown. He was a U.S. Senator from 1864-1875 and married Katherine Chase, the daughter of Lincoln cabinet member, Salmon P. Chase.
